Word of the week... Panjandrum

May 15, 2020

Our series about alternative words beginning with 'pan' continues with a term that, coincidentally, seems very apt given our current circumstances...

Defined as 'a pompous self-important official or person of rank', a panjandrum is hardly an alien concept to many people right now.

But it's objectively a great word, with three syllables that roll around pleasingly in the mouth like balls in a tombola. I'm already thinking about what situations I can engineer to enable me to use it...

Given the lack of variety in my current opportunities to insult people face to face, I'll have to make do with telling the dog what a 'panjandrum' he is next time he demands to be taken for a walk. Meanwhile, I'll continue to hope that there is at least one less panjandrum blotting the global landscape this time next year...
